What is Sublimation Clothing?
Sublimation clothing refers to all garments made of fabrics capable of absorbing the entire design from a special type of paper when both the fabric and the paper are heated to between 175 and 230°C in a heat press.
It gets its name from the fact that the term sublimation refers to a direct transition from solid to gas without first passing through a liquid state. What changes the state of sublimation clothing is the dye-sublimation ink. It is solid on paper, gaseous as it passes through the paper to the fabric, and solid again once it penetrates the fabric fibers. Now, let us investigate how and where that switch occurs.
How does sublimation printing work?
Now that you’re familiar with sublimation and sublimation clothing, let’s look at how it works in practise, not just theory.
To make sublimation printing work, you must have the following:
- A design you need to print
- Dye-sublimation printer
- Dye-sub paper
- Calendar heat press
- Ideal fabric for sublimation

Dye Sublimation = More Comfort
Because the dye is contained within the fibres rather than on their surface, you will not feel as though you are wearing something on your t-shirt. This is true for garments that have been heat press printed or screen printed. Similarly, dye sublimation prints will not increase the stickiness of your clothing, resulting in increased comfort
